Setting DVD playback options

Use the DVD tab to set parental control and language settings for all DVDs.

To access the DVD tab

The following options are listed on the DVD tab:

Parental control

Specifies whether to use parental control or not. Select this check box to prevent unauthorized users, such as children, from viewing DVDs that have Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings higher than the rating you choose.

Select a rating

Lists the MPAA ratings. For example, if you want to prevent unauthorized users from viewing DVDs that are rated R or higher, select PG.

You must set up appropriate Windows user accounts and passwords to use DVD parental control. If you do not set up appropriate user accounts, the DVD parental control settings will not take effect. For more information about setting up user accounts, see Windows Help.

Defaults

Click to set the default language for audio soundtracks, captions and subtitles, and the DVD onscreen menus.

Click To
Audio language Choose the audio soundtrack language.
  • To always play audio soundtracks in a particular language, select a language from the list. Note that the language you choose is only played if the DVD you are watching supports that language.
  • To override the audio language setting for a particular DVD, see Related topics.
Captions and subtitles Choose the captions and subtitles language.
  • To always display captions and subtitles in a particular language, select a language from the list. Note that the language you choose is only displayed if the DVD you are watching supports that language.
  • To always use the default caption and subtitle language for a disc, click Title Default. Subtitles and closed captions cannot be displayed at the same time.
  • To always display closed captions instead of subtitles, click Closed Captions.
  • To override the captions and subtitle language setting for a particular DVD only, see Related topics.

Player performance may degrade when displaying subtitles or closed captions on computers with limited video memory.

DVD menu Choose the DVD menu language.
  • To always display DVD menus in a particular language, select a language from the list. Note that the language you choose is only displayed if the DVD you are watching supports that language.
